Peace March: An Oregon State University tradition, the Peace March follows the breakfast and provides an opportunity to join in solidarity with community members and reflect on Dr. King’s legacy of creating transformative change through non-violence. Participants are led across the Corvallis campus on a 1-mile route, from the CH2M HILL Alumni Center to conclude at the Student Experience Center Plaza for speakers and community. Jan. 16, 11 a.m. to noon. This event is free and open to the public. Participants are invited to bring signs enforcing Dr. King's messages of non-violence.

A Discussion on MLK's Ideology and Caste. This panel event will be a conversation with experts working on caste and race, discussing how Martin Luther King, Jr.'s ideology about race is relevant to the framework of caste. Jan. 17, 12:30-2 p.min the MU Journey Room, 104. Elizabeth Barstow from the School of History, Philosophy and Religion will moderate the discussion. Panelists will include Robert Thompson from OSU's ethnic studies program, and other panelists will join from across the country via Zoom.

This is never more true than now with the additional stressors of police brutality, racism and a global pandemic. Faculty, staff and the student assistants we employ may be in the best position to notice when a student needs additional support. Robot study: The OSU Department of Mechanical Engineering is seeking Corvallis community members who are at least 18 years old to participate in a research study. Students and advisees of Prof. Naomi Fitter and individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing are not eligible to enroll. The purpose of this study is to investigate people’s responses to a robotic stand-up comedian. Participation in this 15-minute-long study involves listening to a robotic stand-up comedian’s comedy routine, completing surveys and participating in a discussion. Participants will receive $5 for participating. David Noakes Memorial Cookbook: David Noakes was a professor in the Department of Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Sciences, and a celebrated baker who sadly passed in December 2020. This memorial cookbook features recipes that David prepared for the FWCS Friday Coffee Club, recreated and photographed by a team of volunteer bakers. A digital version is available here. Inspiring Girls* Expeditions STEAM outdoor expeditions: Inspiring Girls* Expeditions (housed within OSU’s CEOAS) is a tuition-free, 12-day wilderness science education program for 16-18 year-old high schoolers. Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies 50 Year Celebration Virtual Poetry Reading: WGSS is currently accepting submissions for poetry to be read during a virtual poetry reading on Tuesday, Jan. 24 at 5:30 p.m. Submissions will be evaluated by a panel and authors whose work is accepted will be notified by Jan. 15. Nyman given chemistry award: Chemistry professor May Nyman was awarded the 2023 American Chemical Society F. Albert Cotton Award in Synthetic Inorganic Chemistry. She received this award for seminal contributions to the synthesis and development of a family of chemical compounds called polyoxometalates. Nyman was also recognized for her support and mentoring of students and young researchers. A symposium honoring Nyman is planned for the 2023 spring American Chemical Society meeting.

Internationalization Grant Application now open: The Office of Faculty Affairs Internationalization Grant is open to all OSU professional and academic faculty and INTO OSU employees. The program awards up to $5,000 for projects that advance the university’s internationalization agenda. Traffic and Maintenance

NEW! Steam shutdown: Each year Facilities Services performs necessary maintenance on the university’s steam system, which requires shutting off the steam throughout campus, to complete maintenance services at the plant, throughout the steam tunnels and in each building. This process affects hot water supply, heating, and all equipment that uses steam, campus wide. The steam shutdown for 2023 will occur June 19-23. Washington Way: As part of the Washington Way Improvement project, Washington Way between 17th-26th streets and 30th-35th streets will be closed starting Jan. 3. The north-south intersection at Washington Way and 26th St. will remain open (view map). Updated schedule: 17th-26th streets closed Jan. 3-5; 30th-35th streets closed Jan. 10-20.
