Migrating whales forced into danger's path in 'Wild West' Arctic (Newsweek)

Researchers from the Marine Mammal Institute at Oregon State University used over 10 years' worth of acoustic data to monitor the movements of the whales as they traveled along their migration routes. They found that they have started leaving the feeding grounds later and later in the year, with a six-week difference in 2022 compared to 2008.

Forests in the coolest, wettest parts of the western Pacific Northwest are likely to see the biggest increases in burn probability, fire size and number of blazes as the climate continues to get warmer and drier, according to new modeling led by an Oregon State University scientist.
 

Study reveals home health care linked to increased hospice use at end-of-life (WRNJ Radio)

“By providing personalized care, reducing hospitalizations, fostering family involvement and support, and improving symptom management, home-based care can enhance the quality of end-of-life experiences for patients with terminal illnesses and their families,” said Hyosin (Dawn) Kim, research assistant professor at Oregon State University and first author of the study.

Women’s self defense: From noon to 4:15 p.m., Feb. 23-25, Oregon State University and the Department of Public Safety will be offering “R.A.D. Systems” Women’s Self-defense Classes on campus. This class will be 3-days (12 hours, 45 minutes in total)The R.A.D. Systems training program is nationally recognized and specializes in providing “a deeper understanding of one’s potential,” as it relates to self-defense. The class is free. NEW! Religion and Social Change: An Interfaith Dialogue: Eliza Young Barstow, senior instructor of religious studies, is hosting a series of panels featuring a diverse collection of religious leaders from the Willamette Valley who have agreed to gather and discuss challenging social issues. The sessions will be panel discussions, with questions asked by Barstow. Toward the end of each session there will be time for audience questions. The first session is at 4 p.m. Feb. 27 in the La Raza Room of the Memorial Union and focuses on birth control and abortion. 

NEW! Say Hey: Say Hey will be hosted at OSU from 5:30-8 p.m. Feb. 27 by the Portland Partners in Diversity. The goal is to help connect local businesses and community members with professionals of color. Employees of color are honored at the event and encouraged to register as honorees. Core Curriculum for OSU Managers and Supervisors: The Core Curriculum for Managers and Supervisors is a training program for all Oregon State managers, supervisors and lead workers. Diversity Science Colloquia: Roberto L. NEW! Taste Sensitivity Study: We are looking for participants for a research study examining how hunger state influences taste sensitivities to carbohydrates. Participants must be healthy, non-diabetic non-smokers ages 18-45. The study will involve performing taste sensitivity tests before and after eating a provided meal. Annual Summer Youth Soccer Camp, ages 3-13: Attending our youth camp June 19-21 is a great opportunity for kids to enjoy soccer while building lasting relationships with Oregon State student-athletes. Campers will work directly with our players and coaches in our very own athletic facilities. The camp is for every level of player, both boys and girls.
