Researchers from the Marine Mammal Institute at Oregon State University used over 10 years' worth of acoustic data to monitor the movements of the whales as they traveled along their migration routes. They found that they have started leaving the feeding grounds later and later in the year, with a six-week difference in 2022 compared to 2008.
Whale communication expert Dr. Kate Stafford, from Oregon State University, described the study as "groundbreaking".
Out of this funding, $1.31 million will go to the Cooperative Institute at Oregon State University to study ocean conditions modeling, measure marine predation and assess climate impacts on marine food webs.
Forests in the coolest, wettest parts of the western Pacific Northwest are likely to see the biggest increases in burn probability, fire size and number of blazes as the climate continues to get warmer and drier, according to new modeling led by an Oregon State University scientist.
“By providing personalized care, reducing hospitalizations, fostering family involvement and support, and improving symptom management, home-based care can enhance the quality of end-of-life experiences for patients with terminal illnesses and their families,” said Hyosin (Dawn) Kim, research assistant professor at Oregon State University and first author of the study.

Women’s self defense: From noon to 4:15 p.m., Feb. 23-25, Oregon State University and the Department of Public Safety will be offering “R.A.D. Systems” Women’s Self-defense Classes on campus. This class will be 3-days (12 hours, 45 minutes in total). The R.A.D. Systems training program is nationally recognized and specializes in providing “a deeper understanding of one’s potential,” as it relates to self-defense. The class is free. Religion and Social Change: An Interfaith Dialogue: Eliza Young Barstow, senior instructor of religious studies, is hosting a series of panels featuring a diverse collection of religious leaders from the Willamette Valley who have agreed to gather and discuss challenging social issues. Annual Summer Youth Soccer Camp, ages 3-13: Attending our youth camp June 19-21 is a great opportunity for kids to enjoy soccer while building lasting relationships with Oregon State student-athletes.
