Seventh Annual Social Justice Student Conference: Climate Change, Peace and Global Social Justice. This trans-disciplinary international conference offers perspectives based on current student research regarding comparative genocide, war and peace studies and history, as well as political, cultural, social and educational theory and praxis with regards to civil and human rights. Human Resources Service Delivery webinar: There is now an easier and more efficient experience with HRSD to directly engage with HR/Payroll. Resources on the portal include a service menu, centralized knowledge-base and Benny the virtual agent. The Making of a Public Radio Show: A Conversation with the Team from Live Wire. Live Wire is a weekly radio variety program that features interviews with writers, musicians, activists, and other interesting folks, plus musical guests and comedy. Live Wire’s host, Luke Burbank, and executive producer, Laura Hadden, share over 30 years of Public Radio experience between them. OSU Associate Professor Elena Passarello has served as Live Wire’s Announcer since 2018. The event is 7:30-9 p.m. April 25 at The LaSells Stewart Center. Reserve a seat. Ethnic Studies lecture: “Women building community at the borderlands.” Michelle Tellez, professor in the Department of Mexican American Studies at the University of Arizona, will share from her recent award-winning book “Border Women and the Community of Maclovio Rojas: Autonomy in the Spaces of Neoliberal Neglect.” She will speak from 3-5 p.m. April 27 in SEC 354.
College of Science and Department of Microbiology inaugural Berg Lecture: Featuring internationally acclaimed microbiologist Jo Handelsman at 5 p.m. April 27 at The LaSells Stewart Center. In her lecture, “A World Without Soil: Science and stewardship of our endangered natural resource,” Handelsman will address the impacts of climate change on the world's soil loss and suggest practices to improve soil health. Handelsman is the director of the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Reception starts at 6 p.m. RSVP today.
FourSight Mindset Reveal Workshop: How do you approach a challenge? FourSight Mindset Reveal is a new workshop presented by University Human Resources that dives deep into the way that we solve problems together. Joe Alexander, "A Dozen Camps": Joe Alexander is this year’s Holocaust Memorial Week survivor-speaker. Alexander spent his youth in the town of Koval, Poland, in a family that included his parents, three sisters, and two brothers. Gerontology conference: The 47th Annual OSU Gerontology Conference will be held on Friday, June 2, at CH2M HILL Alumni Center. The conference provides contemporary and applicable gerontological education from a variety of disciplines and perspectives across the nation and world. There are 15 speakers this year, and the keynote speakers are Rawle Andrews Jr., executive director of the American Psychiatric Association, who will discuss mental health; and Larry S. Mid-Month Emergency Preparedness Topic: Fire. Nationally since 2000, 85 fatal fires, claiming 118 lives, have occurred on college campuses, in Greek housing or in off-campus housing within three miles of the campus. Each year more than 2,500 people die and 12,600 are injured in home fires in the United States, with direct property loss due to home fires estimated at $7.3 billion annually. Robotic Sound Research Study: The Oregon State University Department of Mechanical Engineering is conducting a research study to better understand how people interact with robots that sound different. The study lasts for about 45 minutes. The full study title is “Evaluating Sonification for Interactive Robots” and the principal investigator is Prof. Naomi Fitter. Internationalization Grant application closes Friday: The Office of Faculty Affairs Internationalization Grant is open to all OSU professional and academic faculty and INTO OSU employees. The program awards up to $5,000 for projects that advance the university’s internationalization agenda. Applications for the spring cycle are due by 5 p.m., April 21. Affordable Learning Grant: OSU's Open Educational Resources Unit is accepting proposals for the Affordable Learning Grant until May 19. The grant provides funding to adopt, adapt or author an open educational resource, such as a textbook. An open textbook is one that is published under an open copyright license and is made freely available online for students, faculty and the public. All funding is a department-to-department transfer. Speaker funding available: The President’s Commission on the Status of Women has funding available for groups seeking to engage speakers (virtually or in person) whose message supports PCOSW’s mission of advancing gender equity at OSU. NEW! Jefferson Way: Jefferson Way will be closed between Benton Place and Waldo Place on April 22. The intersections at Benton Place and Waldo Place will be closed in all directions. ADA parking at the Furman Hall West lot will remain open. Other impacts include noise, dust and mud near the construction site.
