"Offshore wind is the most mature technology without a doubt," Bryson Robertson, director of the Pacific Marine Energy Center at Oregon State University, told me. "We've been working on wind energy systems really since the birth of civilization. We were running sails [on boats], and we were using windmills to grind wheat."
Even if your home survives, it’s just the beginning in a natural disaster. “When we talk about resilience, we talk about the ability to bounce back as a community,” explains Erica Fischer, an Oregon State University engineering professor, who has visited disaster sites around the world to study successful approaches to resilience. “If you don’t have access to an emergency room, or schools, or a grocery store, are you going to stick around?”
The board includes Chunhuei Chi, a professor at the Oregon State University College of Health who previously worked on Taiwan’s universal health care system. He said that when Taiwan went through six years of planning its universal health care plan it left out key questions that Oregon’s board should consider.
“Previous studies have shown that hatchery-origin Chinook salmon have lower reproductive success relative to their natural-origin counterparts when they spawn in the wild, but this study looks beyond that,” said Kathleen O’Malley, an associate professor at Oregon State University and the study’s senior author.

OSU Extension to offer calving school: The OSU Extension Service will host two calving schools in Corvallis this year,1:30-5 p.m. April 19 and 1:30-5 p.m. April 22. These classes are designed for ranchers or farm workers who are new to calving. Topics will include nutritional and management strategies, calving facilities, the calving process, newborn calf care and dystocia, along with a hands-on activity. EPA Earth Day open house: The US Environmental Protection Agency office located on the OSU campus at 200 SW 35th St. will hold an Earth Day open house from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. April 22. There will be lab tours, poster presentations and a chance to meet with scientists. The OSU community is welcome.
Health Professions Fair: The Health Professions Fair connects students with admissions representatives from over 90 health professions schools and programs in Oregon and across the country. This free event will be held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., April 23 in the Dixon Recreation Center first floor gyms. Students from all majors, first year through seniors, are welcome. Slumberland VR Theatre: Experience “Slumberland,” a beautiful digital dream world at 2 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. April 22-May 11 in Ray Theater at PRAx. Bombina Bombast, an award-winning performing arts company from Sweden, is a pioneer in the field of "live virtual reality." In this 45-minute, participatory VR experience, audience members wear a virtual reality headset, interacting with one another and with an actor (who is also in the physical theater) wearing a motion-capture suit. The goal of OSU’s Hearing Conservation Program is to monitor and protect employees who have the potential to develop noise-induced hearing loss – a preventable, permanent and progressive health issue. In collaboration with Environmental Health & Safety, Occupational Health Services provides annual hearing tests for those exposed to loud noise on the job. OSU Alumni Association receives national inclusive excellence award: The Oregon State University Alumni Association has received the 2024 Alumni Association Inclusive Excellence Award from Insight Into Diversity magazine, the largest and oldest diversity and inclusion publication in higher education. OSUAA was selected for the honor because of its commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in alumni leadership, its unique alumni engagement programs, its promotion of diverse alumni achievements and its work to support underrepresented students and community members. Duo Passcodes: Upcoming Retirement. Passcodes for Duo authentication will retire on May 8. Passcodes are six-digit codes that are usually generated by a hardware token and can also be obtained through the Duo Mobile app. If you are using Verified Duo Push, this change will not affect you. Verified Duo Push sends a 3-digit code to your phone and is currently used by most of the OSU community. Learn more by visiting: beav.es/duo-passcode.
Mid-Month Emergency Preparedness Topic: Fire. Arson is the second leading cause of campus fires following cooking. Over half of campus arson fires are in on-campus residential buildings and most of these are set in hallways or corridors. Campus arson often starts as a prank but pranks can turn deadly, as all big fires start small. Fulbright: The 2025-26 Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program competition is now open. This program offers U.S. citizens opportunities to teach, conduct research and carry out professional projects in over 135 countries. IT awards: The IT Recognition Committee welcomes nominations for the 2024 OSU IT Annual Awards acknowledging the dedication and commitment of OSU IT community members in one of six areas. DPO Teaching Award: To recognize excellence in Difference, Power, and Oppression (DPO) teaching, we invite nominations for the newly established DPO Teaching Award. Awardees will receive up to $1,000 as part of their recognition. Nominees must have taught at least one DPD/DPO course within the last two years and been instructors or faculty of record.
