Oregon State University’s Director of the Center for Global Health, Chunhuei Chi, has promoted the use of masks for months. “I have been the lone voice since the beginning in early February, ever since I guess my first interview with a journalist. I have been criticizing that wrong message,” he said.

 

Oregon State professor leverages large Instagram following to provide cash for the coronavirus-strapped (Oregonian)

“Lord Birthday” began as a creative outlet for Oregon State professor Chad Murphy, his modestly satirical drawings and writing that have gained popularity on Instagram. Since its genesis five years ago, Lord Birthday has resulted in two books and 245,000 followers on Instagram. And now, some meaning, as Murphy has been turned what he calls an “unexpectedly serious hobby” into doing good for those in need during the coronavirus outbreak.

OSU-Cascades student creates website for student activities during pandemic (Bend Bulletin)

After more than 150 hours of work, Oregon State University-Cascades' student life department has a new website. It provides virtual activities, events and other information to students who won't attend a class in-person for the rest of the spring term due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Introduction to CORE: The Cooperative Open Reporting Environment (CORE) is OSU's central tool for accessing official university reports and institutional data. This session is designed to give new employees and CORE users who would like to review the basics an orientation to CORE. Topics in this session include security and policies related to the access and use of data, how to find and save what you need from CORE, and helpful tips and tricks for interacting with and using the system. Music à la Carte (Facebook Live): Halie Loren The Music à la Carte concert series continues with a series of Facebook Live events on Fridays. Faculty meetings: President Ray and the Faculty Senate Executive Committee are continuing the long-standing tradition of sponsoring small-group faculty (academic, research and professional) conversations. Each conversation will be facilitated by a Faculty Senate Executive Committee member and will consist of up to 12 faculty. These conversations provide the President with an opportunity to receive candid feedback from faculty and an occasion for idea and information exchange. Public safety input sessions: OSU students, faculty and staff are invited to participate in two remote community input sessions to consider the values, principles and expectations regarding public safety and the new OSU Corvallis campus police department. The OSU Public Safety Advisory Committee — made up of students, faculty and staff — will take stock of this input in providing final recommendations to university leaders. COVID-19 Funding Opportunities: LEAP FORWARD: If you want a National Science Foundation grant related to the Covid-19 pandemic, you can apply through existing funding opportunities or use the Rapid Response Research (RAPID) funding mechanism, set up for proposals having a severe urgency with regard to availability of or access to data, facilities or specialized equipment as well as quick-response research on natural or anthropogenic disasters and similar unanticipated events. Requests for RAPID proposals may be for up to $200K and up to one year in duration. Well-justified proposals that exceed these limits may be entertained. Offset carbon emissions from your OSU travel: Have you completed OSU-funded travel this fiscal year? Apply for the $5k Innovation Day Award by May 4: OSU faculty members are invited to submit a one-page Idea Pitch to the OSU Advantage office for the chance to receive a $5k award. The Idea Pitch should answer a commercial question in the faculty member’s research, such as, “With this proof, I can confirm that I have unique innovative technology” or “I can confirm which industry will be interested in the outcome of this research.” Attendance at the April 23 “From Idea to Societal Impact” webinar is required to be eligible to submit. Applications for PCOSW scholarships and event co-sponsorships for Summer/Fall term projects are now being accepted. The President’s Commission on the Status of Women provides funding to faculty, students and staff who are pursuing professional development, research, outreach or creative projects related to women’s issues.
