How wildfires affected Oregon tree nurseries (OPB News)

Wildfires and last summer’s heat dome in Oregon have not only changed the demand for seedlings, but have shifted the way some nurseries think about what to plant. We’ll hear from Glenn Ahrens, an OSU Extension Forester, and George Kral, owner of Scholls Valley Native Nursery, on the future of seedlings and forestry.

PFLA Zoom event: Wikipedia Editathons (presented by Laurie Bridges, OSU Valley Library). Did you know OSU hosts an annual Wikipedia editathon focused on black history of the Pacific Northwest? University Budget Committee: The Committee will meet this Friday, April 15, from 2-3:30 p.m. via Zoom. The UBC is OSU’s advisory body to the Provost for recommendations on tuition rates, budget priorities and budget policies. The committee will discuss projections and planning relevant to developing budget and tuition recommendations for 2022-23. If you are interested in joining as an observer, register for the webinar here.

Beyond Earth Day: Join Community Engagement & Leadership, Campus Recycling, Sustainability Office and the Corvallis community in celebration of the 52nd anniversary of Earth Day. During the Saturday of Service April 16, students and faculty staff can participate in environmental service projects with community partners. Hawaiian event: The 67th annual Hō‘ike (formerly known as the Lūʻau), an event that celebrates Hawaiian dance and culture, takes place April 16 at The LaSells Stewart Center on the Oregon State University Corvallis campus. The title of this year’s hō‘ike is “Ke Au O Ka Hula, Hula Over the Years.” It will focus on the history of hula and Hawaii. Doors open at 3 p.m. The show begins at 4 p.m. Guests will be provided with a bento box dinner after the show. Student tickets are $10. Public tickets are $15. The menu includes vegetarian options. Earth Day event: Climate crisis, climate hope. Alumni on the cutting edge. April 20, 6 p.m., virtual event via Zoom. All University Sing: Experience a beloved OSU tradition after its two-year hiatus. This high-energy singing and dancing competition has over 500 student participants from Oregon State’s fraternities and sororities. The event is family friendly and open to all community members. Parent and Family Spring Social on April 29: During Spring Family Weekend, Beaver parents and families are invited to enjoy VIP treatment for free at Reser Stadium’s Toyota Club on Friday, April 29 from 4-6 p.m. The Parent and Family Spring Social is a chance for parents and families to casually meet, connect, mingle and learn all about how to support students and get more involved at OSU. NEW! Center for Teaching and Learning: What is trauma-informed teaching and how do you bring it into your classroom? This week we are highlighting resources and skill-building to navigate expressions of trauma in the classroom. For Spring, Tuesday Teaching + Tech Talks are recordings allow you to pursue our Non-credit Certificate using this self-paced, asynchronous approach to encourage flexibility and self-care. Each Talk is housed on our website and has accompanying slides, resources, and contact information in a Box folder.

"Things I Wish I Knew about the U.S. Job Search" for International Students: Get tips on how to navigate the U.S. job search process from an immigration lawyer plus three OSU alums who’ve already been through the process. Dawn Wright seminar: Dawn Wright, aka Deepsea Dawn, OSU affiliate professor and ESRI scientist will be speaking on April 21, 4 p.m. on Zoom. Her talk is titled "The Courage to Escape.” She will speak on her experiences as a woman of color within the geosciences. Spring Creek Project Faculty Residency: OSU faculty members working on projects aligned with Spring Creek Project's mission are invited to apply for a week-long summer residency at Shotpouch Cabin. Art-Science Student Fellowship Applications Due May 9: This one-year fellowship offers OSU students the opportunity to explore the intersection of the arts and sciences. Fellows will develop a creative project informed by engagement with lab or field research, be awarded a $1,000 stipend, have ongoing mentorship, and receive a residency at the Cabin at Shotpouch Creek. Human-robot interaction: The Human-Machine Teaming Laboratory in Oregon State University's Collaborative Robotics and Intelligent Systems Institute is conducting a research experiment to study human-robot interaction for simulated supervisor-based environments. Participants will complete a series of tasks that require controlling and monitoring a simulated remotely-piloted vehicle and will complete anonymous questionnaires. The experiment requires participants to complete one two-hour session. Eat Free: @eatfreeosu is a Twitter account managed by the Human Services Resource Center student team. This account broadcasts information about open events on campus that also have food available. If your event is closed, but you have extra food, a message can be crafted asking students to show up at the end of your event. How Has the Pandemic Impacted Your Cat? We are looking for cats and their owners to help us understand how cat behavior and human-animal bonds were impacted by the pandemic. This OSU Human-Animal Interaction Lab research study will take place on the Oregon State University Corvallis campus (Withycombe Hall) and will include two behavioral attachment tests with your cat (taking approximately 20-30 minutes). Traffic and Maintenance

Sidewalk closure on Jefferson: For work related to the Community Hall Slope Project, a sidewalk closure on the north side of Jefferson Avenue from 15th Street to Benton Place is scheduled (view map). The sidewalk closure is scheduled for Monday, April 4, through Sunday, May 15. Pedestrian detour signs will be in place throughout the closure.
