Oregon State University is in the process of creating an natural hazard mitigation plan to summarize the impact of natural hazards on OSU infrastructure.  Creating the plan, with funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Pre-Disaster Mitigation Grant program, makes OSU eligible to apply for post-disaster mitigation project funding.

The plan will help OSU identify ways to reduce the potential loss of life and property by studying the impact of natural hazards and identifying ways to lessen the impact of disasters caused by earthquakes, floods and other hazards.  The planning process identifies vulnerabilities and risks associated with natural hazards and develops mitigation strategies to reduce the risk and reduce economic impact, recovery and construction costs post-disaster.

A public comment meeting will be held Sept. 7, at The LaSells Stewart Center, 875 SW 26^th St., Corvallis, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. to review and solicit input for the plan.

The local planning process includes representatives from OSU, the city of Corvallis, and neighboring agencies, representing emergency management, community development, and OSU departments.

"We want to ensure that OSU is able to meet our commitment of providing a quality education to our future leaders, pre- and post-disaster. We are also part of the Corvallis community, and share many resources between the two communities. Through community partnership and input to our natural hazards mitigation plan, we can identify mitigation activities that reduce the impact of hazards and keep OSU a viable partner to Corvallis and the state of Oregon."
