CORVALLIS, Ore. - Rita Colwell, former director of the National Science Foundation, will speak at Oregon State University on Tuesday, April 21, about her experiences as a woman in science.
Her talk is titled "Just because you are a pawn, you do not have to lose the game." It will be in Kearney Hall, Room 112, at 3:30 p.m.
In addition, Colwell will give a lecture on her research on April 21 at 7 p.m. in The LaSells Stewart Center, Construction and Engineering Hall, titled "Oceans, Human Health and Infectious Disease: The story of a marine bacterium, Vibrio cholera."
Both talks are free and open to the public.
Colwell is a Distinguished University Professor at both the University of Maryland at College Park, and Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. Her research focuses on global infectious diseases, water and health. She's currently involved in the creation of an international network to address emerging infectious diseases and water issues in collaboration with Safe Water Network.
Colwell was NSF director from 1998 through 2004, and one of her ongoing areas of interest has been to increase the participation of women and minorities in technology, science and engineering. Her appearance at OSU was made possible by Oregon State ADVANCE.
