CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State University senior Kyle Bidwell of Sumner, Wash., took first place in three categories and was named overall champion at a recent tournament for the OSU forensics team.

He took first place in open program oral interpretation, first place in open extemporaneous speaking, first place in open impromptu speaking, and second place in prose interpretation. Bidwell also was recognized as both the top International Public Debate Association (IPDA) speaker and as the overall IPDA champion at the Spokane Falls Community College Voices on the River Speech and Debate tournament, held March 11-13.

"This tournament was a perfect way to cap off a wonderful regular season," said Mark Porrovecchio, director of the team.  "It was gratifying to do so well.  Now we are turning our attention to the national tournaments."

Bidwell's peers added to the team's successes. Daniel Meiwes of Corvallis received third place in open program oral communication and open impromptu speaking. Kori Thornburg of Kennewick, Wash., took second place in open impromptu speaking and third place in open persuasive speaking. Blane Higa of Pearl City, Hawaii, received second place in open informative speaking. Jamil Barbar of Portland took fourth place in novice persuasive speaking.

As a result of these wins, OSU received the second place overall sweepstakes award.

The travel squad was rounded out by Anna Crandall of Salt Lake City, Utah, and graduate assistant Forest Ledbetter of Sheridan, Ore., who served as primary coach at the tournament.

The forensics team also recently returned from Budapest, Hungary, where they competed in the International Forensics Association's annual tournament and took home an overall sixth place sweepstakes award.

Celebrating its 118th season, OSU forensics is one of the oldest clubs on campus. For more information on the team, contact Porrovecchio at mark.porrovecchio@oregonstate.edu
