CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Oregon State University's Summer Undergraduate Research Program has enrolled 60 students, the largest class in its 13 years.

With support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, scientists in microbiology, bioengineering, fisheries, chemistry and other fields will host students from Oregon and other states for 11 weeks, starting in late June and culminating in a public symposium Sept. 19-20.

Participating students work with professors at OSU, the University of Washington, University of Montana and Montana State University, but students do not need prior research experience.

"About half of the students in the program each year have never had research experience," said Kevin Ahern, program director. "Our program is aimed at helping students to decide if a research career is right for them or not."

By the end of summer, 530 students will have participated in the program. OSU has long recognized the unique educational value of an individual research experience, officials say. The Howard Hughes grant substantially increases the number of students who are able to participate in an intense, full-time research experience with other students and a faculty mentor.
