CORVALLIS, Ore. - A physician will address the subject of "Hidden Stresses and your Health" in a lecture at Oregon State University that begins at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 18, in Gilfillan Auditorium.

Dr. David Clarke is speaking as part of the OSU Program in Medical Humanities lecture series on Pain and Its Meanings. The event is free and open to the public. Gilfillan Auditorium is located at Monroe and S.W. 26th Avenue in Corvallis.

In many illnesses that bring someone to a doctor, the cause cannot be found with medical tests. This occurs when the symptoms come from hidden stresses in a patient's life that leave no physical damage.

The symptoms are real, however, and may occur anywhere in the body. This condition, called stress illness, can be mild or severe and causes symptoms in millions of people that may last for years.

Since 1983, Clarke has cared for thousands of patients with stress illness. His techniques for diagnosis and treatment are described in the book, "They Can't Find Anything Wrong!" Clarke is a gastroenterologist and emeritus clinical assistant professor at the Center for Ethics at Oregon Health & Science University.

Clarke has lectured extensively on stress illness to physicians, mental health professionals, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and other groups including chaplains, pharmacists, chronic pain specialists and the public across the United States and in Europe.
