CORVALLIS, Ore. - Stevan Arnold, a professor of zoology at Oregon State University, has been named president-elect of the American Society of Naturalists.

This group, founded in 1883, is the oldest American professional society devoted to the biological sciences. Its goal is to advance knowledge of organic evolution and other broad biological principles, and work to unify the biological sciences. The organization also publishes the American Naturalist, a scholarly journal used by ecologists and evolutionary biologists.

Arnold, who earned his doctorate from the University of Michigan, is an expert in quantitative genetics and has published extensively on micro- and macro-evolution. He is also the curator of amphibians and reptiles at OSU.

Arnold has served on various committees and as vice president of the American Society of Naturalists, been a member of editorial boards of the University of Chicago Press and three professional journals, and was president of the Society for the Study of Evolution.
