CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Graduate School at Oregon State University is beginning a new fellowship and scholarship program to help attract in the coming year some of the nation's most talented graduate students in various fields of study.

This 2011-12 Provost's Distinguished Graduate Fellowship Program will provide fellowships with a 12-month stipend of $30,000 for doctoral students and $22,000 for master's students. In addition, one-time scholarships will be awarded as $6,000 grants for doctoral students and $4,000 for master's students.

It's anticipated that about 30 fellowships and 15 scholarships will be awarded.

"This is an important move for the university to provide more centrally funded scholarships and fellowships, in addition to those already made by our departments, colleges and other programs," said Martin Fisk, interim dean of the Graduate School. "We hope to recruit some highly accomplished graduate students and really raise the profile of our research and creative degree programs."

The primary target population is newly admitted doctoral students, although new master's students will also be considered in areas where a doctoral degree isn't available, officials said. In addition, the fellowships will pay for full academic year tuition and enrollment in three graduate credits during summer term.

Nominations for the prestigious awards are being sought from program directors and department leaders. More information about the program can be obtained from the OSU Graduate School.
