CORVALLIS, Ore. - Kathy Spillar, executive editor of Ms. magazine, is the keynote speaker for the Northwest Women's Studies Association regional meeting at Oregon State University on Friday, April 16.

Her free public talk begins at 6 p.m. in OSU's Memorial Union Room 109.

In her lecture, "Ms. Magazine and Feminist Scholars: Expanding the Reach of Women's Studies," Spillar will address the intersections of academia and activism.

Spillar is executive vice president of the Feminist Majority Foundation and the Feminist Majority, national organizations working for women's equality, empowerment, and non-violence. Spillar has been a driving force in executing the organizations' diverse programs securing women's rights, including the "Campaign to Stop Gender Apartheid in Afghanistan," "National Clinic Access Project," "Choices Campus Leadership Program," and the "Feminization of Power Campaign."

In 2005, Spillar was named executive editor of Ms. magazine, which the Feminist Majority Foundation publishes. Ms. is the oldest and largest national feminist publication, and one of the leading voices of the feminist movement in the United States. 

Spillar also served as president of the Los Angeles chapter of the National Organization for Women from 1985-87. She is a magna cum laude graduate of Texas Christian University and holds a master of science interdisciplinary degree in economics and urban studies from Trinity University.
