CORVALLIS, Ore. - Girls in grades 6-8 and their parents may register until Oct. 30 to attend a free workshop at Oregon State University on careers in science and engineering called "Discovering the Scientist Within."

The workshop will be Saturday, Nov. 7, from 8:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., at the International Forum (also called Memorial Union East, on the south side of Snell Hall). Students and parents will meet with women engineers, doctors, veterinarians, research scientists and university professors.

Guest speaker Katherine Hunter-Zaworski, director of the OSU National Center for Accessible Transportation, will talk about "The Importance of a Woman's Perspective in Engineering Design." The day also includes hands-on activities and field trips to OSU science labs.

"Anybody with a passion can be a scientist," said Sujaya Rao, OSU crop and soil science professor and one of many who want to change the stereotypical perception that scientists are male. A panel discussion for parents is an important part of the workshop, she said, because they can ask questions about how to encourage their daughters to pursue science and engineering careers.

The first girls to register will have first choice of tours. Registration is limited to 100 girls. More information will be e-mailed after registration.
