CORVALLIS - Gordon Matzke, a professor emeritus and former chair of the Department of Geosciences at Oregon State University, has received the Ronald F. Abler Distinguished Service Honors from the American Association of Geographers.

This is one of the top five awards given by this professional organization of geographers, and honors Matzke "for his service to geography in his own department, in his university, in international development, and indirectly, in the many institutions where his well-mentored students have been placed."

Matzke, who is internationally known for his work in human and wildlife interactions in Africa, received his doctorate from Syracuse University and has been at OSU since 1977.
