CORVALLIS, Ore. - Julianne Malveaux, an activist, author and commentator on race, culture, gender and economics, will launch a new series at Oregon State University with a free public lecture on Monday, Oct. 20.

Her talk, which is free and open to the public, begins at 1 p.m. in the Joyce Powell Leadership Room in OSU's Memorial Union. It will focus on the theme of the new series, which is "Race, Ethnicity and Public Policy."

The new series is sponsored by OSU's Department of Ethnic Studies, Intercultural Student Services, Student Affairs, and Community and Diversity. It will feature a prominent speaker or event each term.

Malveaux is the president of Bennett College for Women in Greensboro, N.C., and a well-known author, economist and social commentator. Her writing appears regularly in USA Today, Black Issues in Higher Education, Essence magazine and other venues, and she has a syndicated weekly column that appears around the country in several metropolitan newspapers.

She also appears regularly on CNN, BET and other networks, and recently has been featured on such shows as ABC's Politically Incorrect and Fox News Channel's The O'Reilly Factor.

Malveaux has edited or co-edited several publications, including "The Paradox of Loyalty: An African American Response to the War on Terrorism" in 2002. She also is the author of two column anthologies, including "Wall Street, Main Street and the Side Street: A Mad Economist Takes a Stroll (1999)."

The new OSU series will bring to campus in January a number of rap artists, whose presentation on social justice will be in conjunction with the university's Martin Luther King Jr. commemoration. During spring term, the series will host a social justice conference for students.
