CORVALLIS, Ore. – International Programs at Oregon State University has awarded scholarships to 10 OSU students for study abroad during the 2007-08 academic year.

The $5,000 scholarships from the Diversity Scholars program allow each student to study in a foreign country for at least one term.

As part of the scholarship conditions, once they return from abroad, the students will serve as study abroad ambassadors and mentors, making presentations to student groups, classes, and OSU’s six cultural centers, as well as engaging in other forms of peer mentoring.

The recipients, their majors and study abroad destinations are:

Albany: Maria Brambila, business, France; Miguel Brambila, mechanical engineering, Spain.

Baker City: Matt Jager, music, liberal studies, International Degree, Ecuador.

Bend: Geraldine Casimiro, merchandising management, Mexico.

Blachly: Hunnan Pope, construction engineering management, Mexico.

Corvallis: Monica Juarez-Hernandez, human development and family sciences, Spain.

Eagle Point: Jessica Sandoval, business, Spain.

Jacksonville: Tristan Walker, computer science, Japan.

Portland: Michelle Nguyen, biology (pre-dental), International Degree, Ecuador.

The Diversity Scholars program was created through a grant from the IFSA Foundation, a non-profit organization located in Indianapolis. The foundation focuses on strengthening U.S. undergraduate study abroad opportunities, such as scholarships for international education opportunities particularly among under-represented groups.
