CORVALLIS, Ore. – The College of Education at Oregon State University and OSU’s Extended Campus are offering masters and doctoral degree programs in the Portland and Salem areas.

The master’s in adult education and doctorate in education with an emphasis in community college leadership have been designed with the working adult’s schedule in mind, said Rich Shintaku, chair of the Department of Adult Education and Higher Education Leadership at OSU.

“Our cohort programs in education offer not only an intensive curriculum geared toward working professionals, but an opportunity for individuals to gain exceptional value learning from their peers,” Shintaku said. “Many students build relationships in these programs that continue long after graduation.”

The master’s in adult education degree is a three-year, regional cohort program that meets the first or second weekend of each month at the Wilsonville Training Center in Wilsonville, Ore. Two main areas of interest are offered: development and training specialist in business, industry or higher education; and instructional specialist, master teacher/trainer of adult learners (includes teaching ESL, English as a Second Language). Students can choose one area of emphasis or work within both.

Prospective students for the master’s in education must have a bachelor’s degree, written and oral communication skills, and professional experience and recommendations.

The doctorate in education is an approximately four-year or 108-to-120-credit doctoral degree program. Classes are scheduled for one intensive weekend per month at a conference center at Silver Falls State Park in Sublimity, Ore. Sometimes referred to as the Community College Leadership Program (CCLP), this degree prepares community college faculty and administrators for leadership roles in technical and community colleges, higher education settings, and similar organizations.

Applicants for the doctorate program must have completed a master’s degree in education or a related field plus have a minimum three years professional experience in a technical or community college setting or in a professional field related to teaching, learning or leadership.
