CORVALLIS, Ore. - "Anti-Evolution in America: From Scientific Creationism to Intelligent Design" is the subject of the second lecture in the 2006-07 Horning Lecture Series at Oregon State University. The theme is this year's series is "The Cultural Politics of Evolution."

The lecture begins at 4 p.m. on Oct. 19 in Memorial Union Room 208, on the OSU campus.

Ronald L. Numbers is a professor of history of science and medicine in the department of medical history and bioethics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

He will discuss the organized opposition to Darwin's theory of biological evolution that began in the early 1920s in the United States and chronicle the changes that led to theories of "scientific creationism" in the 1960s and '70s. Numbers also will address the newer form of opposition to evolution known as intelligent design.

Numbers has written or edited more than 24 books, including "Darwinism Comes to America," and "When Science and Christianity Meet." His newest book, "Science and Christianity in Pulpit and Pew," soon will be published by Oxford University Press.
