CORVALLIS, Ore. - Two Oregon State University programs are sponsoring an afternoon of poetry and music on Saturday, May 13.

"Butterflies and Blues 2" will begin at 2 p.m. at the covered bridge on Campus Way at OSU. The event is free and open to the public, sponsored by the Spring Creek Project for Ideas, Nature and the Written Word and by the H.J. Andrews Forest Long-Term Ecological Research program.

Poet and essayist Alison Hawthorne Deming will read her poems, and Corvallis musicians Dave Plaehn and Jeff Hino - known as The Plaehn/Hino Acoustic Blues Duo - will play live music.

Deming will appear after spending a week-long writing residency at the H.J. Andrews Forest. She is a professor of creative writing at the University of Arizona and author of three non-fiction books and three poetry collections, including her latest, "Genius Loci."

The Plaehn/Hino duo will perform their distinct blend of blues, folk and original music on harmonica and steel guitar.
