CORVALLIS, Ore. - James D. White, a distinguished professor emeritus of chemistry at Oregon State University, was recently awarded the 2006 Outstanding Scientist award by the Oregon Academy of Science, in recognition for his work in the area of organic synthesis.
White received his award during the group's 64th-annual meeting at the University of Oregon. He shares this honor with fellow professor David C. Johnson of the University of Oregon.
White, who earned his doctorate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, came to OSU in 1971 from Harvard University. His research has focused on the development of new methods of synthesizing complex molecules, and his current interests are in natural marine products.
He began his work in the marine environment while he was a Guggenheim Fellow in 1990. Since then his research has lead to several advances in clinical pharmaceuticals.
