CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State University will once again this summer offer high school students the experience of living on campus in a residence hall, attending college classes, meeting with advisers and getting a jump on what college life is all about. And they'll earn two college credits.

"A Taste of College" is a two-week summer residential program for high school students in grades 10-12, offered through OSU Extended Campus P-12 Outreach Programs. Formerly called Pre-college Academic Success, the program is a valuable experience for high schoolers who may be unsure about college or for those just wanting a head start. Participants do not need to be Oregon residents.

"We are excited to offer a program that is so beneficial to students preparing for the next steps after high school," said Bill McCaughan, dean of the Extended Campus. "This experience creates a smooth pathway and a seamless transition for them into college life."

The program covers academic and exploratory topics, and includes field trips to special OSU locations - the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport and the tsunami wave research lab on campus.

Students will meet with OSU advisers and staff to learn the basics of getting into college and being successful there. Critical thinking, learning styles, college writing, leadership and study skills are emphasized. Students also get valuable tips about transitioning from high school to college.

"The presentation on advising was exceptional," said Kaylee Ornelas, a 2005 participant from Springfield. "I felt reassured the advisers are really there to help you stay on track. I am feeling less nervous about college everyday."

Participants stay in a campus residence hall and eat in a nearby dining hall. Students have time to study, do library research, and work in the computer labs. Time is also set aside for students to socialize with new friends on campus. Students take photos and post their observations in a blog.

The cost for the program is $2,100 and covers tuition and fees for two OSU credits, all meals and lodging, field trips, instructional materials, and staff costs.
