CORVALLIS, Ore. - The winners of "The Real Oregon Coast" photo contest have been announced by the sponsors, Oregon Sea Grant at Oregon State University and Oregon Coast magazine in Florence. The winning photographs go on display at OSU's Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport on Dec. 23.

"We developed this contest to explore and celebrate the creative vision that many photographers bring to this much-loved place," said Joseph Cone, Sea Grant assistant director. "We were seeking photographs that show what makes the Oregon coast distinctive and unique, that capture its essence."

Professional, amateur, and junior photographers entered a total 300 photographs, out of which the judges chose 11 winners and honorable mentions in three categories: The Natural World, The Oregon Coast in Transition, and Coastal People and Communities of Interest.

Winners received cash awards or merchandise at the Sea Grant-supported Visitor Center bookstore at the OSU Hatfield Marine Science Center.

In addition to the exhibition at the Hatfield Visitor Center, winning photographs will be published in the January/February 2007 issue of Oregon Coast magazine and posted on the Oregon Sea Grant web site (www.seagrant.oregonstate.edu)
