CORVALLIS - Talented teen artists ages 15-18, many of whom have been shut out of advanced visual and performing arts at their high schools because of budget cuts, will have an opportunity to fill that void this summer when Oregon State University hosts its annual three-week art workshop, Jumpstart.
Registration has begun for the accelerated art instruction program, which begins with orientation on Sunday, June 25. Classes run from June 26 through July 14 on the OSU campus.
Jumpstart participants may choose among a variety of courses not regularly offered in high school curricula, including digital animation, musical innovations, figure drawing, and modeling the human figure, as well as photography, sculpture, painting, printmaking, theater and video and others.
The courses are taught by OSU faculty members in art and theater, and supplemented by a slate of visiting artists that this year includes an innovator named Vladimir, who creates multimedia events using Viewmaster viewers; and Scott Clum, designer and director of Ride Design Studio Space in Salem.
"We also hire talented artists and faculty from around the United States to teach at Jumpstart," said John Maul, an associate professor of art at OSU and coordinator of the program. "They all really get enjoyment out of working with talented, motivated young artists."
Jumpstart participants spend six hours in studio classes each day and attend workshops and lectures by the visiting professional artists and designers. At the end of the three-week session, each participant will have a portfolio of work that "really helps students with admission to leading universities," Maul said.
The OSU Department of Art, which sponsors Jumpstart, annually awards two students in the program with scholarships to OSU.
Tuition for the program is $1,695 for the residential plan and $995 for commuters. Some scholarships and partial scholarships are available.
