CORVALLIS, Ore. - Blitz, the artist behind the rap album, "Soul Rebel," is coming to Oregon State University as part of the campus' annual Kwanzaa cultural holiday celebration.
The three-hour event, which is free and open to the public, starts at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5 in OSU's Milam Auditorium.
Blitz was born and raised in Ghana, but later moved to New York. It was his exposure to artists and groups such as Public Enemy and KRS-ONE, along with musicians Miles Davis and the Dead Presidents, that influenced Blitz's style of social and political commentary in his music. Blitz focuses on issues facing African Americans.
Kwanzaa, founded in 1966, is celebrated from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1 and is based on the principles of unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith. Oregon State students are on winter break during the holiday, so students usually stage Kwanzaa celebrations in late fall.
