CORVALLIS - A second delegation of university faculty from Pakistan have arrived at Oregon State University - part of a pioneering program funded through a grant from the U.S. Agency for International Development.
A reception will be held for the delegation on Friday, May 13, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in Education Hall Room 107.
The program is designed to encourage educational improvement and innovation in Pakistan, and begin breaking down cultural stereotypes in that country and in the United States. The first group of Pakistani educators was on campus fall and winter term.
The visiting faculty members specialize in teaching college students in Pakistan who are interested in becoming teachers of English in that country. They will be on the OSU campus through Aug. 31.
OSU is one of just three universities in the country participating in the program, along with the University of Montana and George Mason University.
"One of the main goals of the program is to begin addressing the literacy rate in Pakistan, which is as low as 20 percent in rural areas," said Michael Dalton, assistant to the dean in OSU's School of Education and project co-director.
