CORVALLIS - The Oregon State University Department of Music will present its annual "Spring Sing!" on Sunday, May 22, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church (114 S.W. 8th St.) in Corvallis. Admission to this public performance is $5 at the door.
"Spring Sing! is the culmination of a year's work for many of our choirs at OSU," said Steven Zielke, director of choral studies. "It represents a joyful evening of song and merriment, with both serious and silly music. The program promises to have something for everyone."
The evening will include performances by Meistersingers, the men's choir; Bella Voce, the women's choir; Outspoken, a male a cappella ensemble; Divine, a female a cappella ensemble; and Trouveres, a madrigal group. Music will range from classical choral works and holy music, to folk and pop songs.
There will even be a surprise rendition of a familiar nursery rhyme, which, Zielke says, will bring a smile to everyone.
An OSU tradition, Zielke says this year's Spring Sing! is even more significant because it will include a memorial commemoration for former OSU student and Meistersinger, Skye Balkwell, who died in 2003. The choirs will perform "For the Fallen," written by Laurence Binyon and arranged by Mike Sammes, in Balkwell's honor.
The Meistersingers will also invite Balkwell's parents to become honorary members of their choir.
