CORVALLIS - Three professors in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Oregon State University have been named fellows by two of the most prestigious professional organizations in their fields.
Terri Fiez, director of the school, was elected fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers for her "contributions to analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits." Karti Mayaram was also elected a fellow of IEEE "for contributions to coupled device and circuit simulation." Both Mayaram and Fiez are part of the OSU College of Engineering's mixed-signal integration systems research cluster.
The IEEE has 360,000 members and confers this honor upon members with extraordinary accomplishments. This year it recognized 268 members as fellows. Members of the organization have expertise on areas ranging from aerospace, computers and telecommunications to biomedicine, electric power and consumer electronics.
Bella Bose, professor and associate director for the school, was elected fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery "for contributions to the fundamental theory and design of unidirectional codes." The ACM serves 80,000 members and is the premier organization for computing professionals, and its fellows program honors outstanding members for their achievements in computer science and information technology. Only 20 members were named ACM fellows this year.
Already an IEEE fellow, this latest honor recognizes Bose's innovative work in "error correcting codes." Bose is author of the renowned Bose-Lin code, the code used in some new microprocessors.
Throughout their careers, the OSU researchers have been awarded more than $10 million in research funding. Their individual and collaborative research breakthroughs have affected everything from personal computers and CD players to cell phones.
"This is a tremendous honor for these three individuals and the entire College of Engineering," said Ron Adams, dean of the college. "International recognition at this level clearly illustrates that our faculty are world-class and doing cutting-edge research and teaching here at OSU."
