CORVALLIS - Registration is now open for the international conference Diet and Optimum Health, an event on May 18-21 in Portland, Ore., organized by the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University.

At the conference, a diverse group of experts will discuss their latest findings on health and disease prevention related to diet, lifestyle, oxidative stress, vitamins and other micronutrients.

Discounts are available for pre-registration until April 18, and some student scholarships can also be arranged for the event. More details on registration, fees, speakers and other information can be obtained on the web, at http://lpi.oregonstate.edu/conf2005/index.html, or by calling (541) 737-5075.

A broad range of presentations are expected at the conference, on such topics as exercise and health; lifestyle and genetic influences on bone health; the health benefits of antioxidants and flavonoids; the use of metal chelators for disease prevention and treatment; and the benefits and risks of alcohol consumption.

"We're anticipating a distinguished group of experts at this year's conference to explore some of the most critical issues in the field of diet and health," said Balz Frei, professor and director of the Linus Pauling Institute. "There should be some important discoveries and new therapeutic strategies to explore."

Leading researchers will attend the event from such institutions as the University of California at Berkeley, Purdue University, Boston University School of Medicine, the National Cancer Institute, Tufts University, the University of Michigan Medical School, Harvard School of Public Health, and other institutions.

A free public session will be held on Saturday, May 21, featuring a panel discussion by renowned nutrition experts on the U.S. food guide pyramid and the question "what should Americans eat to be healthy?"

A highlight of the conference will be presentation of the third Linus Pauling Institute Prize for Health Research, one of the leading honors in the world for excellence in research in the field of nutrition and health. It includes a medal and $50,000.
