CORVALLIS - Oregon State University environmental safety employees posted warning signs along Oak Creek at Avery Park advising the public to avoid contact with the water because of increased levels of bacteria.
Elevated levels of fecal coliform bacteria were discovered in the creek during testing, prompting the precautions.
"Oak Creek historically has elevated levels of fecal coliform because of the number of animals near the creek and increased development," said Steve LeBoeuf, OSU's Environmental Health and Safety manager. "Since the sampling came from where a storm drain emptied into the creek, we wanted to find the source."
LeBoeuf said the source was traced to animal holding facilities at Magruder Hall on campus that drained into the storm line. The university will direct the flow from that storm line into the sewer line eliminating the problem, he said.
OSU will begin testing other storm and sewer lines on campus, using dye and smoke.
Health officials generally advise that people and pets avoid contact with water that has increased levels of bacteria. If contact is made, washing with soap and water is suggested.
