CORVALLIS - Guerrilla Girls On Tour - a feminist theater collective that performs original plays, street actions and visual work designed to combat sexist, racism and discrimination - will present "Feminists are Funny" at 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, at Oregon State University's LaSells Stewart Center.
The two-hour show is free and open to the public.
The group, based in New York, has performed throughout the world, said Cynthia Briggs, an OSU graduate student who is coordinating the event for the campus Women's Center.
The group formed about a decade ago when three women who perceived a lack of opportunities for women in theater decided to explore a way to combine performance and visual art.
Performances are designed to be entertaining and educational, as well as funny. The collective, which has 20 members, tours about 20 cities a year worldwide. Performers are all volunteers and the effort is financed by donations and touring fees.
A hallmark of the performance is that all members of the troupe wear masks while on stage. Each performer takes on the name of a dead woman artist. Members say that being anonymous allows their own personalities as performing artists to become secondary to fighting racism and discrimination.
