CORVALLIS - Five Oregon State University faculty members have received grants from the Fulbright Scholar Program to travel abroad for teaching and research during the 2004-05 year.

Three other Fulbright scholars will visit OSU.

Morrie Craig, a professor of biomedical sciences in the College of Veterinary Medicine, will travel to the University of Tokyo in Japan, where he will spend from January through August conducting research on potential toxins in ryegrass that can affect grazing animals.

Pui Shing Ho, a professor and chair of OSU's Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, will be at Louis Pasteur University in Strasbourg, France, from June through September of 2005, studying DNA structure and sequencing.

James A. Kennedy, an assistant professor of food science and technology, also will be in France, where he will analyze tannins in grape skins and wine while at Victor Segalen University in Bordeaux from May through August.

Gregory Perry, a professor of agricultural and resource economics, will lecture and conduct research at the University of Talca in Chile through December of this year. His focus is on applied operations in the field of water resource economics.

Richard E. Sapon-White, a librarian at OSU, will lecture on cataloging and metadata at Charles University in Prague, the Czech Republic, from February through June.

The five OSU faculty members are among some 800 faculty and professionals in the United States who will travel abroad to about 140 countries for the 2004-05 academic year through the Fulbright Scholar Program.

Three international faculty members will visit OSU. Glenn Doromal Aguilar, a professor of marine fisheries and oceanography from the University of the Philippines in the Visayas, arrived at OSU in September and will remain through March of next year. He is studying knowledge management systems that can be used for decision-making in Philippine fisheries.

Khalid Faraj Almutlaq, an associate professor in the Department of Plant Protection from King Saud University in Saudi Arabia, also arrived last month and will be at OSU through August studying characteristics and sources of pesticides in the environment.

Julian Meldon D'Arcy, an associate professor of English from the University of Iceland in Reykjavik, arrived at OSU in August and will remain through December, studying college football in 20th-century American fiction.
