CORVALLIS - Thayne Dutson, dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences and director of the Agricultural Experiment Station at Oregon State University, has been awarded the Irving Award, the highest award for service of the American Distance Education Consortium.

"Dutson has worked tirelessly to move ADEC forward with new programs, funding sources and marketing initiatives during a period when demands were constant at his home institution," said Janet Poley, national ADEC president. "ADEC can thank him for today's strong financial and political base. He initiated annual reporting to members and encouraged broader participation in ADEC on his campus, throughout the Northwest, nationally and internationally."

Dutson has served as chair of the ADEC Board of Directors for the past three years and is in his second term as a board member. As an OSU dean and director, Dutson serves on the boards of the Oregon Department of Agriculture, the Agri-Business Council of Oregon and the Oregon Garden.

ADEC is a leader nationally and internationally in adapting information technologies for use in delivery of distance education programs. The consortium also develops systems to help members produce and distribute distance delivered learning modules, courses and degree programs.
