CORVALLIS - John "Jack" Van de Water, the former dean of International Programs at Oregon State University, has received a Fulbright grant to work at The American University in Bulgaria.

The grant is part of the Fulbright Senior Specialists Program, which awards two- to six-week grants to leading U.S. academics and professionals to support curriculum development, faculty development and institutional planning in institutions around the world.

Van de Water, who has led international initiatives for the Oregon University System in addition to his OSU administrative duties, has spent the past several months working to establish international programs at the OSU-Cascades Campus in Bend.

The Senior Specialists Program was designed to complement the traditional Fulbright Scholar Program, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

Grants under the new program are shorter in duration, encouraging more senior level educators to afford the time away from their regular positions.

While overseas, grantees conduct teacher training workshops, develop and assess curricular material, and lead seminars.

Van de Water came to OSU in 1976 and spent more than a quarter century leading international initiatives for Oregon State and the Oregon University System, where he served as assistant vice chancellor for several years.
