CORVALLIS - Oregon State University has awarded 57 fellowships to undergraduate students to do original research through the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Summer Research Program.

Under this initiative, which is now in sixth year at OSU, students receive more than $3,500 for 11 weeks of work during the summer doing laboratory and field research with a faculty mentor in such fields as biochemistry, zoology, microbiology and other areas.

The program is supported by a four-year, $1.9 million grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, which aims to enhance the teaching of biological principles to college and pre-college students.

"OSU has long recognized the unique educational value of an individual research experience," said Kevin Ahern, faculty coordinator of the summer fellowship project. "The Howard Hughes grant substantially increases the number of students who are able to participate in an intense, full-time research experience over a several-month period, engaging in frequent contact with other students and with a faculty mentor."

Additional support for the program this year will come from the OSU Center for Gene Research, the Environmental Health Sciences Center, the OSU URISC Program, the National Science Foundation, and numerous individual research grants.

At the end of the summer, students will participate in a three-day symposium to present their research results to their peers, mentors and the general public.
