CORVALLIS - Jon "Joe" Hendricks, dean of the University Honors College at Oregon State University, has been selected to receive the 2004 Clark Tibbitts Award from the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education.

The award recognizes individuals who have made a significant contribution to the advancement of the gerontology field in higher education.

Hendricks is nationally known for his work on ethics and policies that affect the elderly, and has done landmark research on medication use and alcohol abuse among elderly populations.

He has been at OSU since 1988 after spending 17 years in the sociology department at the University of Kentucky. Prior to being named dean of OSU's University Honors College, he chaired the Department of Sociology in OSU's College of Liberal Arts.

Hendricks will receive the award during the association's 30th annual meeting, scheduled Feb. 26-29 in Richmond, Va. He will present the annual Tibbitts Lecture on the topic, "The Search for Middle Ground: Socioemotional Selectivity in Later Life."
