CORVALLIS - William Gerwick, an Oregon State University professor of pharmaceutical sciences, has been selected to serve as a member of the bio-organic and natural products section for the Center for Scientific Review of the National Institutes of Health.

As a member of the study section in natural products, Gerwick will help the panel review grant applications submitted to the NIH and make recommendations to their appropriate advisory council or board. The sections also survey the status of research in their respective fields.

Gerwick is widely known for his investigation of the cancer-fighting properties found in marine organisms. Focusing primarily on blue-green algae, he and his research team have uncovered numerous natural compounds that not only show promise against cancer, but also have anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties.

Selection to the panel is based on achievement in research, publication in scientific journals, and other activities.
