CORVALLIS - Dr. Luiz Bermudez, an associate professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Oregon State University, has been named a member of a scientific review board for the National Institutes of Health to work with scientists studying illnesses related to AIDS.

Bermudez, an infectious disease expert, will serve for the next four years on the AIDS-associated Opportunistic Infections and Cancer Study Section of the NIH Center for Scientific Review. In this position, he will review and make recommendations on NIH grant applications and survey the status of research in this field of study.

At OSU and elsewhere, Bermudez has conducted fundamental and applied research on a variety of bacterial diseases, including tuberculosis, brucella and tularemia.

Appointment to one of the NIH review boards is an honor reserved for scientists who have demonstrated a high level of scientific research accomplishments and important publications that have made significant contributions to the national biomedical research effort, officials say.
