CORVALLIS - Registration is now open for fall classes in the Saturday Academy program at Oregon State University, with many topics for middle and high school students ranging from wave research and medical careers to space travel.
Registration and more information about courses, times, and locations can be obtained on the web at http://oregonstate.edu/precollege/academy/, or by calling 541-737-8139. Most classes meet for a single day and have small fees. Tuition assistance is available for all events, and students from Albany and Mill City schools pay half price.
The courses for middle school students this fall include a day of chemistry, creative engineering design, open house at a wave research laboratory, computer languages, companion animal veterinary practice, materials engineering, web pages and animation, and realistic drawing.
The classes for high school students include choosing a college, illustrating children's books, high performance materials, forensic engineering, careers in medicine, animal locomotion, and veterinary medicine.
Saturday Academy is a non-profit, extracurricular educational program to provide interesting, hands-on learning opportunities for students in grades 6-12 in science, mathematics, and technology. Area business, educational and professional leaders serve as instructors.
Freshmen, sophomores and juniors in high school may also wish to obtain information about next year's Apprenticeships in Science and Engineering program. This popular eight-week summer program involves work with a mentor. Contact Ellen Ford at 541-737-1822 for more information, or view it on the web at www.aseprogram.org. Applications for the summer, 2004, program can be obtained in December.
