CORVALLIS - Michael Morrissey, director of Oregon State University's Seafood Lab in Astoria, has been named one of Oregon's top 50 "Great Leaders for Oregon for 2004" by Oregon Business magazine.
Morrissey, who is a professor of food science and technology, was recognized for his efforts in forging the Community Seafood Initiative to provide $1.2 million in grants to apply high pressure processing, develop value-added products, and to help seafood businesses identify niche markets. Through his efforts, Michael was successful in obtaining a major grant from ShoreBank Enterprise Pacific and the Kellogg Foundation for local economic development.
Diane Moody, markets and information director for ShoreBank Enterprise, was also identified as one of the 50 top leaders.
The magazine says of Morrissey: "With $1.2 million in grants, Morrissey is helping seafood businesses stay afloat in a brutal marketplace."
The magazine quotes Morrissey as saying, "In the marine resource sector, people are creative, entrepreneurial and at times a bit loopy. In the fishing/seafood business, you have to see opportunities and act quickly."
