CORVALLIS - The Oregon State University Symphonic Wind Ensemble, conducted by David M. Becker, will present its fall concert on Sunday, Nov. 16, at 7 p.m. in the LaSells Stewart Center on the OSU campus.
Becker, who joined the Department of Music last year as conductor in residence, will lead the 50-member ensemble in a program entitled "Themes and Variations." He says he gave the concert its title because all of the selections deal with complex development of simple ideas.
The major work of the concert will be Ira Hearshen's "Symphony on Themes of John Philip Sousa," a monumental work written for the U.S. Air Force Band. The first three movements, based on familiar melodies from Sousa's "Washington Post," "The Thunderer," and "Fairest of the Fair" will be performed.
The performance will also include Gioachino Rossini's "Introduction, Theme, and Variations," in which Tim Hatcher, a senior at OSU majoring in music, will be featured clarinet soloist. Ben Lawson, the graduate teaching assistant for the ensemble, and director of OSU's Jazz Ensemble, will conduct John Barnes Chance's band classic, "Incantation and Dance." Other works to be performed include "Mockbeggar Variations," by Guy Woolfenden, a long time head of music for the Royal Shakespeare Company, and "Kitten on the Keys," a transcription of Zez Confrey's 1920's novelty number.
The concert is free to OSU students. Others may purchase tickets at the door for $7.
