CORVALLIS - Emily Keerins of Canyon City has been awarded the $1,000 Babe Coe Memorial Scholarship in recognition of her achievements in 4-H.

The scholarship is intended to encourage outstanding 4-H members to pursue further education and is presented in memory of Beverly "Babe" Coe, a longtime Wasco County 4-H leader.

Keerins will graduate June 8 from Grant Union High School in John Day. She plans to attend Eastern Oregon University where she will study elementary education, according to Elaine Husted, Oregon State University Extension Service 4-H field faculty member in Grant County.

OSU Extension Service conducts the Oregon 4-H youth program.

In high school Keerins was active in Future Farmers of America and Future Business Leaders of America. She has participated in 4-H for nine years, focusing on several areas including animal science, conservation and leadership.

For the past three years Keerins has been the Grant County representative to the Oregon 4-H Ambassadors, a statewide leadership program that promotes 4-H in local communities. She also served the past two years as a member of Oregon's 4-H state ambassadors group, which travels to several special 4-H events throughout the country.

Keerins was selected for the Coe Scholarship from a statewide group of finalists representing many Oregon counties.
