CORVALLIS - The American College of Healthcare Executives has honored an Oregon State University faculty member, a colleague, and two of his students for their essays on the health care industry.

Leonard Friedman, an associate professor of health care administration, and colleague Jim Goes, of Cybernos, LLC in Eugene, will receive the 2003 Dean Conley Award for the paper they co-wrote titled "Why Integrated Health Networks Have Failed."

The award, which goes to the top research paper, will be presented at the organization's national congress in Chicago on March 18.

Also receiving awards will be Jen McCarthy, an OSU doctoral student, who finished second among graduate students with her essay, "The Malpractice Crisis: Making Managers Part of the Solution," and Jackie Thomas, an OSU senior in health care administration, who received the third-place award for undergraduates with her paper, "Lessons from Gandhi: When Leadership and Spirituality Collide."

It was the first time in the organization's 48-year history that students from one school received awards in both categories.

The American College of Healthcare Executives is the premier professional organization for health care administrators.
