CORVALLIS - Good books don't always translate into good films, and vice versa. Seven book-film marriages that did work, however, comprise a new summer film series and summer session course at Oregon State University.
The series is called "I Think I Prefer the Book…" and debuts on Friday, June 27, with a showing of "Rebecca" by Alfred Hitchcock. All of the films will be shown in Owen Hall Room 103 beginning at 7 p.m.
Jon Lewis, a professor of English and noted film industry historian, is teaching the course and hosting the screenings. He will give brief lectures before each screening, focusing on how the studios developed the film projects, and how and why the films differed from the books.
For those who want to see where Hollywood went wrong - or right - the OSU Bookstore will have copies of all the original novels and plays available. More information on registering for the course is available by calling the OSU English Department at 737-3244. The lectures and films are open to the public.
