CORVALLIS - Oregon State University's Music a la Carte concert series will host The Nettles, a Celtic trio, on Thursday, Jan. 16, in OSU's Memorial Union Lounge. The free public concert begins at noon. Audience members are welcome to bring a sack lunch.
The Nettles trio consists of Laura Brophy on fiddle; Kevin Johnsrude, guitar; and Ankush Vimawala, an award-winning Indian tabla player. The trio performs improvisational music that blends traditional Irish and American music with rock, jazz, and blues - a sort of acoustic Celtic jam band. The Nettles often joke that "we never play the same tune once."
They have performed at festivals, concerts, bars and dances in the Pacific Northwest, and get radio airplay worldwide. The group formed in 1996 from a living room jam session. Since then The Nettles have played in venues ranging from the Wintergrass Bluegrass Festival, to the Oregon Bach Festival, to the opening ceremony for the Oregon Senate.
