CORVALLIS - Oregon State University's Music a la Carte concert series will present Alfredo Muro and his Latin ensemble, featuring guitar, double-bass, drums, percussion and vocals. The free public concert begins at noon on Thursday, Feb. 13, in OSU's Memorial Union Lounge.
Muro and his ensemble will perform Latin American music from Argentina to Mexico and from Cuba to Brazil. A virtuoso guitarist, Muro began playing as an adolescent in his native Lima, Perú. Early in his career he discovered Brazilian music, which is a continuing influence. Because he incorporates styles from all of Latin America, his concerts transcend geographic borders.
His CD, "Journey Through the Strings," was released in 1999. Fellow artist José Feliciano said of his work: "The music of Alfredo Muro elevates the guitar to a higher plane than most I've had an opportunity to hear. It is moody and melodic."
Joining Muro are Bernardo Gómez on acoustic bass; Randy Givens, drums; and Otto Gygax, percussion. Although Gomez trained as a classical musician, jazz has become his major interest. He has a passion for Latin syncopations. Givens particularly enjoys playing Brazilian Samba. Gygax, a percussionist for more than 25 years, plays a variety of musical styles including jazz, African, Afro-Latin and Brazilian.
