CORVALLIS - Oregon State University's three-day Mom's Weekend celebration, which begins Friday, May 3, brings a taste of Italy to the Willamette Valley this year with Italian food, music and wine.

Mom's Weekend gives OSU students a chance to share campus with their mothers, but most events are open to the public and typically attract large numbers of community members.

The weekend also gives OSU students experience in organizing large community events, said Tracy Glumich, OSU Memorial Union Program Council program adviser.

"Many people know that Mom's Weekend is a spectacular event, but many people don't know that it is a student-run event." Glumich said.

The theme for this year's Mom's Weekend is "Mama Mia," according to Hilary Berry, Mom's Weekend director.

"We will be bringing an Italian flavor to Mom's Weekend this year having Italian dinner complete with an accordion player on Friday, and hosting an Italian cafe in the Memorial Union Quad on Saturday," Berry said. "We're also featuring wine tasting in the International Forum on Saturday."

Other events include a Friday night comedy show featuring TV sitcom star David Spade, a Renaissance Faire and a variety of live entertainment in the OSU Quad. For information, contact OSU's Memorial Union Program Council at 541-737-6872.

One of the largest Mom's Weekend events, the fashion show, typically attracts people from throughout the region, said Anne Swisher, fashion show director.

"Everybody is welcome - it's not just for Mom's Weekend participants. Many people from Portland, Eugene, Corvallis, and Salem will be there," she said. "Also, we will have motorcycles on stage, and professional hair and make-up artists. It will be fun for everyone."

The show, "Fashion Never Dies," features a James Bond theme, Swisher said. "This year we tried to include the male contingent; so we came up with a James Bond theme. Who doesn't like James Bond."

Swisher has been part of the OSU Mom's Weekend Fashion Show for the last three years.

"This year is my chance to show everyone what I have learned and what I can do; so watch out."

Four showings are scheduled, with one on Friday, May 2 and three on Saturday, May 3. Friday show tickets are $6 and Saturday tickets are $8.

Tickets can be tough to find for last-minute arrivals, she said.

"Each show will seat 508 and the last two shows will sell out. Typically, the first show on Saturday and the show on Friday have around 450 people attend."

A number of professional designers are included in the show, but students are not forgotten. This year, 17 different students have submitted garments they have made at home or in OSU fashion classes.

"This year is the most student designs we have ever had in the show before," Swisher said.

"I have never put so much time and effort into anything like this before, but I know the outcome will be worth it," said Whitney Hutton, fashion show assistant director. "What else do you need for some good entertainment - talented models, motorcycles, James Bond, and rad clothes."
