CORVALLIS - Concert pianist Rachelle McCabe will perform in an Oregon State University faculty recital on Sunday, Oct. 13. The free recital begins at 4 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, 4515 S.W. West Hills Road, in Corvallis.

McCabe, a professor of music at OSU and director of piano studies, has performed throughout the United States and Canada. The music chosen for this program represents her desire to play "both challenging and spiritually fulfilling music" during her 2001-2002 sabbatical year, during which she had the freedom to devote to intensive practicing.

According to McCabe, the opening piece, J.S. Bach's Toccata in D Major, offers many styles of music, from the technically 'showy' to the deeply spiritual.

"Rachmaninoff's 'Corelli Variations' demonstrates the composer's darkly emotional and virtuosic writing at its very best and runs the whole gamut of his amazing technical and expressive devises," McCabe said. "Rachmaninoff seems to have poured his heart and soul into this piece."

She will also play Schumann's "Fantasy in C Major," which is often called his greatest masterpiece for the piano, McCabe said.

In addition to solo recitals in Seattle, Singapore, Malaysia, Washington D.C., Atlanta, Detroit, Portland and Cambridge (UK), McCabe has been heard on NPR's Performance Today, the CBC, and PBS television. She has collaborated in chamber music recitals and concerto performances with some of the world's finest artists including David Shifrin, Peter Schickele, Yuri Mazurkevich, Carol Wincenc and Gary Karr, and performs duo piano concerts with her sister, Robin McCabe.

As concerto soloist, McCabe has performed with the Seattle Symphony, the Pittsburgh, Oregon and Victoria symphonies, and is a frequent soloist with the Corvallis-OSU Symphony. She has appeared in many summer festivals including the Victoria International Festival, The Johanessen Summer School of the Arts, The Highlands Festival in North Carolina, and Chamber Music Northwest. As an artist in residence at LaSalle, a school of the arts in Singapore, she was named an affiliate artist of the school. She is also an experienced harpsichordist and fortepianist.

McCabe received her doctorate of musical arts from The University of Michigan, her master's degree from The Juilliard School of Music, and her bachelor's degree from the University of Washington.
