CORVALLIS - The Association for Women in Science will sponsor a workshop for seventh- and eighth-grade girls at Oregon State University on Saturday, Nov. 2, designed to give young female scholars and their parents information and support about pursuing a career in science or engineering.

The event, "Discovering the Scientist Within," is free, and will run from 8:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. The registration deadline is Oct. 28.

More information about the event and about registration can be obtained by contacting Sylvia Harvey at 541-754-6637, or by e-mail at srh18@attbi.com. Registration can also be made by sending an e-mail to this address, if registrants include their name, address and school they attend.

The program will include hands-on activities in an "engineering challenge" and the opportunity to meet successful women scientists, including engineers, doctors, veterinarians, research scientists and university professors. There will also be field trips to OSU science labs, Hewlett Packard and Good Samaritan Hospital.

Parents are welcome to attend tours or a parent workshop that is part of the program.

The event is run completely by volunteer women scientists from the community, and it is sponsored by the Provost's Office at OSU.
